North Tonawanda girl, 12, sexually assaulted on her way to school

North Tonawanda police canvassed the city for known sex offenders Thursday after a masked predator attacked a 12-year-old girl on her way to school, dragged her at knifepoint to a vacant house and terrorized her for three hours before she escaped.

The girl, who was on her way to her school bus stop when the attack began, was sexually assaulted in an incident that sent shock waves through a tidy city neighborhood.

“This is very unfortunate and disheartening, especially an attack on someone of such a young age,” School Superintendent Vincent J. Vecchiarella said.

The girl, a North Tonawanda Middle School pupil, was walking from her home to a bus stop on Gilmore Avenue at 7 a.m. when she was approached by a white man wearing a dark ski mask and dark coat. The man held a knife to the girl and dragged her to the house at 608 Gilmore Ave., which neighbors said has been abandoned for more than a year, since the death of its owner.

Capt. David M. Rousselle said the girl was held inside the house for three hours, until she escaped by climbing out a window and running to a nearby home. Police were called at 10 a.m.

Blankets and bedsheets that had been tied together dangled from a second-story window of the vacant house as officers began their investigation.

The girl suffered cuts, bruises, abrasions and a laceration. She was treated at Women and Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, Rousselle said.

“I believe that physically she is fine, but mentally . . . ,” he said, his voice trailing off.

The girl was unable to provide detailed information about her attacker, who remained at large Thursday night.

She described him as white and of medium height and medium build.

Police combed the house where the attack occurred, hoping that physical evidence left at the scene might yield some clues. Niagara Falls crime scene investigators were among those who handled that work in the hours after the girl escaped.

Yellow crime scene tape circled the house, which sits amid blocks of well-tended homes and is across the street from the school district’s administrative offices. The house is in view of a city park, and Gilmore Elementary School is a few blocks away.

Judy and I are home all day and are on the neighborhood crime watch, but there is no crime,” said Linda Swartz, who lives nearby on Humphrey Street.

“There’s no problems here. It’s so quiet. We’re just shocked.”

Swartz said she and other neighbors are fearful of another attack.

Police promised school officials that they would increase their patrols.

“The area where the attack happened is not a problem area, but the city does have a number of sex offenders, and we will be canvassing that list,” Capt. Roger R. Zgolak told The Buffalo News. “But right now, it is very early in the investigation.”

Vecchiarella said school administrative staff members realized shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday that a crime scene was nearby but did not know for about two hours that a district pupil was the victim.

Once they were told, they activated the district’s automated phone alert system to call parents and tell them that a 12- year-old had been attacked in the area of Gilmore Avenue and Taber Place.

The district also noted, “The schools are safe and secure, but since the police do not have the perpetrator in custody, we recommend heightened supervision of your children upon going to and dismissal from school.”

Vecchiarella said that the district has 4,300 students and that all were told to walk with a friend, be alert and take precautions.

There is no school in the district today because it is Good Friday.

High school students got general word of the attack at the end of the school day and knew only that “something” had happened and that they needed to be careful walking home.

“We were all scared,” said one senior, who said text messages about the attack spread throughout the school.

As she watched the police investigation unfold, Judy Wesolowski, who has lived in the area for 41 years, said the day’s events were “unbelievable.”

“I tell my grandchildren, ‘Don’t go out by yourselves, anywhere. You don’t know what’s walking out on these streets anymore,’ ” Wesolowski said.

Wesolowski and Swartz blamed the city for not doing more about the abandoned house, which had been uncared for, with overgrown grass, for more than a year.

Police are asking anyone who was in the neighborhood Thursday morning and might have information about the attack to call the main desk at 692-4111 or the Detective Bureau at 692-4312
